Solar Energy Volunteer is a project from "A Helping Hand for Vrindavan"

Thanks for taking the time to review our idea for the construction of solar panels is this small unique village of India, where with our volunteering program we have developed initiatives for the cleaning of the rivers and the population, ecological education for children and now taking the project to a new level: renewable energy.

During the past 5 years we have developed the project A Helping Hand for Vrindavan with which we have achieved to contribute to the ecological wellbeing of this particular village, installing grids for the straining of garbage preventing its deposit in the rivers and periodic cleanings with volunteers of the diverse sacred places.
We have also collected donations for mobilizations with riksas to clean the city, among many other projects. This time we wish to construct solar panels, inspiring the community of the locality to follow this example and decrease the use of polluting energy such as we obtain with fossil fuels (used in motors) and noise pollution.

It’s a lot more than just a charity program; with your contribution and the help from the volunteer team we can give the first steps towards the use of local energy in Vrindavan, where the community suffers the consequences of a deficient source of energy and the contamination related with the use of noisy motors fed by fossil fuels.

You can be a volunteer, contribute with this pilot plan so it can be replicated in other places and we can show that solar energy is one of the best alternatives to protect the environment.

Gracias por tomarte el tiempo para revisar nuestra idea para la construcción de paneles de energía solar en este pequeño y único pueblo en India, en donde con el programa de voluntarios hemos desarrollado iniciativas para la limpieza de los lugares donde vive la gente y sus ríos, la educación ecológica de los niños y ahora llevando el proyecto a un nuevo nivel: la energía renovable.

Durante los últimos 5 años hemos desarrollado el proyecto Helping Hands for Vrindavan con el cual hemos conseguido contribuir al bienestar ecológico de este particular pueblo, instalando rejillas para la contención de basuras, el equipo de voluntarios realiza periódicamente jornadas de limpieza de los diferentes lugares sagrados, conseguimos la donaciones para movilización en riksas (bicicletas)y así limpiar de la ciudad, entre muchos otros proyectos. Esta vez queremos construir paneles de energía solar, con la idea de que otras comunidades de la localidad también sigan este ejemplo y se pueda disminuir el uso de energías contaminantes como la que obtenemos de los combustibles fosiles (usado en los motores) y la contaminación auditiva.

Es mucho más que un programa de caridad, con tu contribución y la ayuda del equipo de voluntarios podremos dar el primer paso hacia la utilización de energía solar en Vrindavan, donde la comunidad sufre las inclemencias de un suministro deficiente de energía y la contaminación relacionada con el uso de ruidosos motores alimentados con combustibles fósiles.

Tú puedes ser voluntario, contribuir con este plan piloto para que sea replicado en otros lugares y mostremos que la energía solar es una de las alternativas más factibles para conservar el medio ambiente.

What we need and what you obtain

We wish to install solar panels as an alternative source of renewable energy in the Eco Yoga Village Vrinda Kunja, located in the town of Vrindavan (India).

To acquire solar panels destined to cover the total energy consumption of the community which is of 5kWp, and install the grids to prevent the monkeys (very popular in the village) from destroying them, we require USD 15.000. The expenses relative to the campaign and communications are covered by the team of volunteers of the Eco Village.

We can be the pioneers in the installation of solar panels in the city, serving as an example to follow and we are willing to give total support and consultation to the rest of the community based on this experience.

Para comprar los paneles solares destinados a cubrir el total del consumo que es de 5kWp, e instalar rejillas para evitar que los monos (muy populares en la comunidad) los destruyan, se requieren 15 mil dólares. Los gastos relativos a la realización y difusión de esta campaña serán cubiertos por un equipo de voluntarios de la eco aldea.

The Little Things that Change the World

Vrindavan is a town that has conserved a mystical and spiritual tradition for thousands of years. It’s known as the city of 5000 temples and annually receives thousands of pilgrims from around the world.

In Vrindavan there are various communities in multiple temples. Among these is the eco village Vrinda Kunja where the volunteering program has been contributing to the town for the past 15 years.

We are not only thinking in benefit of the specific Eco Village; this project intends through our volunteering program to improve the quality of life of the population and the environment. Some of the projects that have been done are:

Construction and maintenance of the Hanuman School: through donations we’ve received and with the constant help of volunteers from around the world, we have constructed the first installations for the Hanuman School, where more than 30 children meet daily in the afternoons and receive English and organic agriculture classes. Some teachers are paid with the donations and others are part of the volunteering team.

Cleaning the Yamuna: preventing solid plastics such as bags and bottles to get to the river, using a system of grids installed in the wastewater channels. Daily follow ups are made and cleanings of more than 15 areas with a group of local workers and international volunteers from the Eco Village. These workers are also paid with donations received in the ecological community.

Garbage: we´ve installed garbage containers in the most important pilgrimage places. With hundreds of pilgrims in Vrindavan, most of the garbage is not collected appropriately. The installation of the public containers in the main temples generates an improvement for the environment and at the same time is an educational program for the local inhabitants.

Recovering areas that represent cultural patrimony for humanity: one of our initial achievements was to motivate local organizers to recuperate a lake that had become dump, transforming it into a beautiful park with clean waters.

Restorations: one of the oldest and most important temples of Vrindavan (Radha Gopinath Mandir) was in a state of abandonment since the last Muslim invasion. Currently we have achieved to recuperate two areas and transform them to public gardens. The project continues to grow and important donations have been collected for the restoration of the temple.

Posters and art on the streets: some volunteers offer their artistic abilities through street theatre, posters and murals with ecological messages and specially developing educational strategies for the issues with plastic use. As a result from this service from the team of volunteers, we have achieved that the population feels identified with the seriousness of the environmental problem and participates actively in the cleanings.

From plastic to natural: due to the constant flow of pilgrims in the many temples of the town, in the past years its becoming popular to use plastic plates leaving aside the traditional practice of organic plates made from palm leaves as well as mud cups. Through an intense educational campaign in relation to the harmful effects of plastic, we have now achieved that most temples return to their traditional use of natural plates.

The main focus of our services in Vrindavan of education are to local villagers, aiming that they take individual and collective actions that prevent the damage caused to the environment in the day to day habits. As a satisfactory result we have seen growth in the interest of other organizations such as the Braj Foundation, Food for Life, etc. that are motivated to adopt these environmental and educational programs.

Now we want to be an example so that in the future other communities of the locality substitute the use of dirty energy for the consumption of clean solar energy, and due to the trajectory that we have, we are confident that we can achieve our goal thanks to the support we have from the community, who has seen the positive results and the improvement of their village with the program.

Vrindavan es una ciudad donde se conserva una tradición mística y espiritual desde hace miles de años. Es conocida como la ciudad de los 5000 templos y anualmente recibe miles de peregrinos de todo el mundo.

En Vrindavan conviven varias comunidades en sus múltiples templos. Allí se encuentra la eco aldea Vrinda kunja donde se realiza el programa de voluntariado desde hace 15 años con un impacto en toda la ciudad.

No estamos pensando solo en el beneficio de una eco aldea en particular, pues a través del programa de voluntariado ya hemos conseguido mejorar las condiciones de vida y ambientales de la población. Algunos de los proyectos que ya hemos realizado son:

- Construcción y mantenimiento de la escuela Hanuman: A través de las donaciones que hemos recibido y con la ayuda constante de voluntarios de todo el mundo, construimos las primeras instalaciones para la escuelita Hanuman, donde más de 30 niños de la población se reúnen todas las tardes y reciben clases de inglés y agricultura orgánica. Algunos profesores son pagos con estas donaciones y otros son parte del equipo de voluntarios.

- Limpieza del Yamuna: que los residuos sólidos plásticos como botellas, bolsas, etc., no lleguen al rio Yamuna, usando un sistema de rejas instaladas en los desagües de aguas negras que desembocan en el rio. Diariamente se hace un seguimiento y una limpieza de más de 15 desagües con un grupo de trabajadores locales y voluntarios internacionales de la eco aldea. Estos trabajadores también son pagos con las donaciones recibidas en la eco aldea

- Instalación de basureros en lugares importantes de peregrinación: Con los cientos de peregrinos en Vrindavan, muchas veces se generan basuras que no son adecuadamente recolectadas. La instalación de estos basureros públicos en los principales templos genera mejoras en el medio ambiente y es a la vez un programa educativo para los habitantes locales.

- Recuperación de áreas que son patrimonio cultural de la humanidad: uno de nuestros primeros logros fue animar a las organizaciones locales para recuperar un lago que se había convertido en vertedero y transformarlo en un parque muy lindo, con aguas limpias nuevamente.

- Restauraciones: uno de los templos más antiguos e importantes de Vrindavan (Radha Gopinath Mandir) se encontraba en un estado de abandono desde la época de la última invasión musulmana. Actualmente hemos conseguido recuperar dos áreas y transformarlas en jardines públicos. El proyecto continúa creciendo y se han conseguido importantes donaciones para la reconstrucción del templo.

- Afiches y artes en las calles: Algunos voluntarios ofrecen sus habilidades artísticas a través de teatro ambulante, afiches y murales con mensajes ecológicos y especialmente tratando temáticas educativas al respecto del plástico. Como resultado de este servicio del equipo de voluntarios, se ha logrando que la población identifique la gravedad del problema ambiental y participe de las actividades de limpieza frecuentes.

- Del plástico a lo natural: por el flujo constante de peregrinos en los múltiples templos de la ciudad, en los últimos años se hizo común el uso de utensilios plástico dejando de lado el tradicional uso de utensilios orgánicos como platos de hojas de palma y vasos de arcilla. A través de una intensa campaña educativa acerca de los peligros del plástico, conseguimos que nuevamente la mayoría de los templos eviten su consumo.

El foco principal de nuestros servicios en Vrindavan en la educación son a los pobladores locales, para conseguir que tomen acciones individuales y colectivas que eviten el daño causado al medio ambiente por los hábitos cotidianos. Como resultado satisfactorio hemos visto el creciente interés que otras agrupaciones tales como Braj Fundation, Food for Life, etc, tienen por implementar estos proyectos ambientales y educativos.

Ahora queremos ser un ejemplo para que más adelante otras comunidades de la localidad substituyan el uso de energías sucias, por el consumo de energía solar limpia, y debido a toda la trayectoria que tenemos, estamos seguros de que podemos lograrlo ya que la comunidad en general es muy favorable a todas nuestras actividades y recomendaciones porque han visto el impacto positivo y lo que hemos conseguido.
